The Alchemy of Earth: Starting Your Art Collection Small

There is a common misconception that to be an “art collector,” you need vast gallery walls and a massive budget. But some of the most profound stories are told on a smaller scale through calming abstract paintings. In my latest collection, the Earth Series, I invite you to look closer—to find the “miracle in the mud”—and discover why smaller works are often the most powerful way to begin or expand a collection.

The Magic of the Process: From Meditation to Canvas

My creative process does not begin with a brush; it begins with the soul. I start my day or morning with meditation practice and some chanting. This is my spiritual practice, and it is essential to my work. It helps me to create from my heart and to be truly present and connected to the Divine Spirit. Without this grounding, the colors are just pigment; with it, they become a language of the heart.

I think creating calming abstract paintings is very healing for me. Art has always saved me in many, many ways—through periods of depression, during the heavy tides of grieving, and through the most stressful moments in my life. When I am in front of the canvas, the “magic” happens because I am not just painting a landscape; I am painting the peace I find in my spiritual practice.

This is why I love creating these smaller works; they are like concentrated meditations. They have a beautiful background, which I first airbrush to create an atmosphere of light, and then the magic starts as I use fluid acrylic paints to let the energy flow. The smaller scale allows me to maintain an intense focus on every ripple of paint, ensuring that the healing energy I feel while creating is captured within the frame.

The Subconscious Landscape: Hungarian Roots and Romanian Soil

To truly understand the Earth Series, one must look back to my roots. I was born in Romania, a woman of Hungarian heritage, raised in a landscape where the connection to the land is ancient and visceral. Even though I have spent many years in California, the “subconscious spaces” of my childhood find their way onto every canvas.

In the villages and rolling hills of my youth, there was a profound respect for the “old ways”—the textures of weathered wooden gates, the deep, dark loam of the earth, and the vibrant colors of traditional Hungarian embroidery. When I use earth pigments like ochre or umber, I am reaching back to that Romanian soil. When I create a “Zen environment” through my work, I am recreating the stillness of the Transylvanian forests. My heritage pushes through in the joyful use of color and the predominant theme of water for its natural healing properties. These paintings are a bridge between that old-world history and the modern, minimalist aesthetics of today. For me, painting is a way to honor that lineage—a collision of the old and the new, a rebuilding of life after loss, and a constant search for home within the color.

The Alchemy of Earth and Gold in Contemporary Art

In the landscape of contemporary art, the color gold has evolved from its traditional roots in religious iconography into a versatile symbol of modern critique and spiritual exploration. Today, gold represents a spectrum of ideas: from a critique of global materialism and consumerism to a tool for elevating the natural world to a “sacred” status. It serves as a medium for transformation—much like the ancient practice of alchemy—where I turn raw materials into something sublime. Because of its unique kinetic properties, gold manipulates light and space, turning a static painting into a dynamic, immersive experience.

Parallel to this “divine” shimmer is the grounded magic of earth pigments. Professional-grade natural earths—such as ochres, siennas, and umbers—bring an ancient, geological soul to the canvas. These pigments are not merely colors; they are the literal crust of our planet, offering a tactile vibrancy and a “glow” caused by their irregular, natural particle shapes. This creates a living surface that resonates with the history of human expression, stretching back to the earliest cave paintings.

The true magic happens at the intersection of these two elements: the raw earth and the refined metal. Using earth pigments alongside gold creates a powerful visual and conceptual harmony. It represents the cycle of “Prima Materia”—showing the mud and the miracle simultaneously. The earth pigments ground the ethereal quality of the gold, making the work feel organic and soulful. This combination is a celebration of the planet’s natural wonders, turning the humble soil beneath our feet into a transcendent work of art.

Spotlight: Three Windows into the Earth

Within this series, three pieces stand out as perfect entry points for a new collector building their sanctuary:

1. Golden Emerald (13″ x 13″)

“Golden Emerald” is a true “gem” of a painting. Here, the collision of rich emerald greens and shimmering golds represents a moment of growth and light. It is small enough to fit in the most personal of spaces—perhaps a bedside table or a private study—yet vibrant enough to ground the energy of an entire room. It serves as a constant reminder that beauty can be found in the smallest details.

Calming abstract painting Earth's Embrace by Clara Berta, a 20x20 mixed media work with deep earth pigments and organic textures.
Grounding the soul. 🌿
Earth’s Embrace (20″ x 20″) invites you to feel the tactile vibration of natural earth pigments. This calming abstract painting acts as a “visual anchor,” reminding us of our deep, spiritual connection to the soil and the healing power of the natural world.  Showing at Artspace Warehouse.

2. Earth’s Embrace (20″ x 20″)

Scaling up slightly, “Earth’s Embrace” explores the vivid contrasts and textures of the natural world. I’ve manipulated layers of texture paste and acrylic to create a surface that invites you to explore not just the colors, but the “inner language” of the painting. It is designed to feel like a warm, grounding presence, reminding the viewer of our physical and spiritual connection to the soil.

Calming abstract painting Quiet Earth by Clara Berta, featuring a soft airbrushed background and fluid acrylics in natural tones on a 20x24 canvas.
Finding stillness in the flow. 🌊
Quiet Earth (20″ x 24″) utilizes a soft airbrushed atmosphere and the spontaneous magic of fluid acrylics. It captures the steady, silent pulse of the planet—designed to lower the noise of modern life and transform your space into a Zen environment. Showing at Artspace Warehouse

3. Quiet Earth (20″ x 24″)

In “Quiet Earth,” the airbrushed background takes center stage, creating a sense of infinite, silent space. The fluid acrylics dance across the surface, representing the steady, silent pulse of the planet. It is the ultimate example of a calming abstract painting, designed to lower the “noise” of modern life and provide a space for reflection.

Happy Dance | 22×22 | Fluid Acrylic & Pearlescent Pigment
A celebration of movement and the healing power of flow. Featuring my favorite Payne’s gray and a shimmering pearlescent finish that dances with the light.  Showing at Artspace Warehouse

4.  The Rhythm of Restoration: Happy Dance (22×22)

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when movement meets the canvas. My latest piece, “Happy Dance” (22×22), is a celebration of that exact moment—the intersection of physical flow and emotional release.

The Power of Payne’s Gray

If you follow my work, you know my obsession with Payne’s Gray. There is a hidden depth in this moody blue—it feels both grounded and infinite.

In this piece, I let the Payne’s Gray collide with crisp whites to create a fluid gradient. The result looks like it’s still in motion. To capture that “dancing” quality, I infused pearlescent pigments. They catch the light from every angle, mimicking the shimmer of a body moving through space.

Meditative greens or grounding earth tones—these calming abstracts help you grow your collection organically.  Art is a daily luxury. It is a window into the earth’s soul that helps you find your own.

When you collect a piece from the Earth Series, you aren’t just buying a painting. You are buying a unique exploration of the “Prima Materia.” You are bringing home the mud and the miracle.

Art as Healing

For me, dance isn’t just about movement; it’s a form of medicine. It’s how I process the world and find my way back to center.

  • The Fluidity: Rather than forced lines, I let the acrylics find their own path. The upward surge of teal and gray represents a breakthrough—a moment where the “healing” finally takes hold.

  • The Contrast: The calm, matte sage background acts as a steady stage for the organic, pearlescent energy at the center.

  • The Texture: The way the pigments break and settle creates a raw, volcanic texture, representing the energy we release when we finally let go and just flow.

Whether it’s through a pour of paint or a literal dance in the living room, I hope this piece reminds you to find your own rhythm today.

Illuminating the Alchemy: Tips for Lighting Your Collection

Because the Earth Series utilizes both airbrushed “atmosphere” and kinetic gold elements, the way you light these works will completely change your experience of them. These are not static images; they are living surfaces that shift throughout the day. Here is how to make your small works truly shine:

1. Embrace the Golden Hour.  If possible, hang your painting in a room with natural light. As the sun moves across the sky, the gold elements will catch the “warm” light of the afternoon, causing the painting to “glow” from within. This creates a daily ritual of light that keeps the artwork feeling fresh and alive.

2. Use Layered Lighting.  Avoid harsh, direct overhead lights, which can flatten the texture of the fluid acrylics. Instead, use a dedicated art light or a dimmable LED track light. Angle the light from about 30° to 45°—this creates subtle shadows within the texture paste and earth pigments, giving the work a three-dimensional, sculptural quality.

3. The Candlelight Effect.  One of the most beautiful ways to enjoy these works is in low, ambient evening light. In a dimly lit room, the gold pigments act as a mirror, reflecting even the smallest amount of light. It creates a focal point of peace, a “sacred” space where you can sit with your thoughts at the end of a long day.

Why Small Works are the Secret to a Great Collection

For those just starting your journey into art collecting, here is why the Earth Series is the ultimate way to begin:

  • Versatility and Intimacy: These pieces don’t demand a grand foyer; they invite a private conversation. They are perfect for “layering”—on bookshelves, mantles, or as the anchor of a growing gallery wall.

  • Accessible High-Level Artistry: You receive the same professional-grade pigments, archival canvas, and natural wood framing as my massive installations, but in a format that fits your current life and budget.

  • The Power of Curation: Building a collection is about building a visual diary.

  • Smaller works allow you to find your “eye.” Learn what textures move you without the pressure of a large commitment.

Conclusion: Build Your Story, One Piece at a Time

Building an art collection is about building a visual diary of what moves you.

Collecting from the Earth Series means bringing home the “mud and the miracle.”
