Spotlight on Clara Berta: Emotion, Healing, and Layered History
Based in Laguna Beach, Clara Berta is recognized for her emotionally expressive, atmospheric abstract paintings that explore transformation, resilience, memory, and healing.
Key Elements of Berta’s Practice:
- Intuitive Discovery: Rather than starting with a fixed outcome, Berta allows each piece to evolve through a spontaneous exchange between intention and chance.
- Accumulated History: By building successive layers of paint while leaving earlier marks visible, her surfaces mirror human experience, suggesting the past is never erased, but woven into what comes next.
- Balance of Opposites: Transparent washes and moments of visual stillness coexist with concentrated pigments and sweeping gestures.
Beyond the gallery walls, Berta’s compelling artistic narrative was recently celebrated on film when her short documentary, An Artist’s Journey, won Best Short Documentary at the Silicon Beach Film Festival.
“One of the valuable things about a group exhibition is that each artist’s work changes the way you experience the work around it. A quiet painting can make the energy in another composition feel more intense. Those relationships create discoveries that would not happen in isolation.”
