Finding the Flow: Inside Clara Berta’s In The Zone

Abstract art acts as a mirror for a precise, fleeting moment in time. While some works require intense artistic wrestling and weeks of constant reimagining, others arrive with a rare, breathtaking ease. They serve as a perfect snapshot of an artist’s internal climate.

Nowhere is this pure alignment more palpable than in my monumental 60″ x 60″ square masterpiece, In The Zone (available through Artspace Warehouse). To look at this painting is to look directly into a specific day in my studio. It captures a moment where the outside world completely quieted down, the noise dissipated, and pure serenity took over.

Behind the Canvas: A Pathway to Surrender and Joy

The deep sense of peace inside In The Zone is not an accident. In fact, it was born from one of the most perfect, beautiful days of my life. Before stepping into the studio that afternoon, I spent a fabulous morning walking in San Pedro with my late fiancé, Sandy.

We took a walk on an amazing, scenic path near Cabrillo Beach that wound beautifully along the coast. As we followed it, the path gently led us down to a small, hidden pocket of beach. Right there by the water, we reached a profound place of total surrender. We found ourselves surrounded by everyday people who were simply radiating so much pure, unadulterated joy. The weather was absolutely perfect, the harbor water was completely still, and Sandy was feeling wonderful. In that moment, we both felt a rare, simultaneous wave of complete peace and happiness wash over us.

I deeply treasure those irreplaceable, sacred moments that we shared. That exact feeling of effortless, soulful joy is what I brought back with me to the creative studio. As artists, we know it is not every single day that we are truly “in the zone.” However, the profound serenity from that coastal walk filled my soul so completely that when I faced the canvas, my hands moved with an unhurried certainty. I was entirely unified with the medium.

“In The Zone reflects a specific day for me—how I was feeling in that exact moment. It is deeply meaningful because it holds a very true, personal sense of serenity.” — Clara Berta

Tracing the Layers of Serenity and Water

When viewers stand before In The Zone, they are immediately drawn into its fluid depth. The composition leans beautifully into my lifelong fascination with the movement and healing properties of water. Because of that morning in San Pedro, I let the paint move across the canvas freely, smoothly, and entirely without resistance.

The canvas utilizes a sophisticated palette of deep oceanic indigos, soft sky ceruleans, and rich mineral tones. These colors bleed into one another with a gentle, hypnotic grace. Furthermore, the eye is naturally guided toward a central, swirling epicenter of movement. It feels like looking into a deep pool of clarity—a visual safe haven where a busy mind can safely rest.

Because I leave the crisp edges of the canvas painted a clean, minimalist white, the artwork feels entirely unbound. It doesn’t trap the viewer’s eye behind heavy framing. Instead, the peaceful energy of that special day flows directly off the canvas and into your room.

Turning the Page: Honoring the Past, Welcoming the Future

In The Zone is highly meaningful to me because it is an exact preservation of happiness, love, and quiet power. I wanted to capture that feeling so that anyone looking at it could instantly access it. While I will always carry, protect, and treasure the memories of the beautiful moments Sandy and I shared on that path, this painting also marks an important transition point for me.

Today, as I look at the canvas, it reminds me of the beauty of being fully present. It represents an emotional readiness to move forward. Just as the fluid paint flows into new, beautiful shapes, I hold a deep desire to create new memories, explore brand-new paths, and share the genuine joy of the present moment with a new friend.

Bringing the Sanctuary Home: Spatial Impact

Bringing a large-scale piece like In The Zone into a luxury setting—such as a fabulous mid-century modern hotel lobby or a sophisticated contemporary home—is a transformative act. It instantly alters the energy of the entire architecture.

In our hyper-connected, fast-paced modern world, our nervous systems are constantly on high alert. In The Zone operates as a beautiful visual antidote to that modern chaos. Placed over a minimalist wood credenza, anchoring a primary living area, or welcoming guests in a soaring open-concept entrance, it projects the exact sense of calm that I felt while creating it. The viewer is invited to catch their breath, slow down, and absorb that same serenity.

Ultimately, In The Zone is more than a beautiful arrangement of abstract forms. It is an open invitation to share an artist’s most peaceful, cherished day. It stands as a powerful reminder that the most impactful art isn’t just viewed—it is deeply felt.
